New Interliance White Paper, Aging Workforce Strategies that Improve the Bottom Line & Operational Effectiveness, Shows How Lower Colorado River Authority Approached their Impending Retirements

Santa Ana, CA/ January 19, 2006 — Interliance Consulting, Inc. released the second white paper “Aging Workforce Strategies that Improve the Bottom Line & Operational Effectiveness,” as part of their series covering the effects of aging workforces in utilities. The white paper discusses how one municipality approached their aging workforce and the processes they applied to prevent repercussions of attrition.

Energy Central’s Research & Analysis expert Warren Causey collaborated with Lower Colorado River Authority’s Fayette Power Project, Operations & Planning Supervisor, Jennifer Thompson, and Interliance to show how they created an actionable strategy to answer issues arising due to impending retirements.

“When fully staffed, the Fayette Project has a total of 56 employees. She [Jennifer Thompson, Fayette Power Project Operations & Planning Supervisor] knew that in a f ew years half , probably 26 or 27, of those reassuring faces and skilled sets of hands could be gone. And most of them would be leaving at about the same time,” Causey reports in this in-depth examination.

The step-by-step description of the process LCRA undertook to better understand and develop workforce strategies is designed to act as a guide for how other utilities facing similar issues can begin approaching their aging workforces.

“One of the first things Interliance does upon agreeing to help a utility face the pending knowledge drain is determine exactly what existing employees do know about their jobs, thereby determining the effectiveness of existing training programs and what training might have to be developed in the future. This assessment, nicknamed SWIFT for the short timeframe it takes, is done with a proprietary database of utility systems and skill sets along with a survey,” are some of the actions Causey identifies in this report.

The white paper is available for free download on our Downloads page.
