INGAA Foundation Identifies New Strategies for Addressing the Pipeline Industry Workforce  Shortage; More than just an aging workforce problem

Washington DC – The INGAA Foundation released a report today on the growing challenge of maintaining an adequate pipeline industry workforce, suggesting that an industry-wide strategy will be needed in order to recruit new talent for the future.

“Like so many other components of the U.S. energy sector, the natural gas pipeline industry is facing a future workforce shortage that does not bode well for the safe operation and efficient expansion of the pipeline network.  This new study provides an excellent roadmap for the natural gas transmission industry to use in addressing the skilled workforce challenges we face today.  It offers concrete suggestions on how to retain and recruit the talent the industry needs to continue providing reliable transportation and delivery of natural gas from production areas to end users.   This is not just an aging workforce problem; in fact, only 15 percent of employee attrition occurs as a result of retirement” said Donald F. Santa, Jr., President of the INGAA Foundation

In aggregate, the natural gas transmission industry has a wealth of information about, and wide variety of initiatives underway to meet their workforce challenges.  Individually, however, companies often focus on a limited piecemeal approach to their workforce and knowledge management.  Many are taking action, but few feel their planning and resources are adequate, and this information is not consistently communicated to the top executives.

The research results were used as a foundation for developing a comprehensive workforce strategy that considers the components of supply, recruitment, development and maintenance of the workforce.  The strategy led to a roadmap of actions in the short-, medium- and long-term that will minimize the risks and expenses facing the industry today.

The INGAA Foundation plans to follow this study with a series of workshops for their members that will explain the research results and roadmaps in more detail, and provide resources to help them build business cases and action plans for their workforce and knowledge management.

About the INGAA Foundation:  The INGAA Foundation consists of more than 100 companies that either operate interstate natural gas pipelines, or provide equipment and services to the pipeline industry.  For more information on the INGAA Foundation, or to download a copy of the study, please visit the website www.ingaa.org.
